Over 50 people participated in our first Free Day Of Code event. Students got their feet wet by learning how to create a basic HTML website and stylized it using CSS.
After that, we created an application where you can search a city to find local breweries. This application used skills we previously learn in creating our basic website but also incorporated JavaScrip and multiple API calls.
The final product was a sharp looking website with a search bar. Using the search bar, you can see all the breweries in any given city. And if that wasn’t cool enough, the breweries showed up as pins on google maps.
Wrapping up our app, we listened to guest speakers who take pride in the Milwaukee community.
Startup MKE was first on the docket. Matt Cordio, Co-Founder and CEO, talked about the importance of entrepreneurship and how it can shape Milwaukee future. Followed by Henry from Mob Craft Brewery who shared the idea of MCB which began back in college, struggles in the early days, and the thriving company he has today.
The TSR Solutions group wrapped up the guest speakers. Their team talked about the importance of a game plan, communicating in the workplace, how their team works together to provide a long-term solution to their customer’s problem. Tommy, TSR’s CEO, was gracious enough to show us a demo project the team is working on where you can control your lights on your smartphone.
After a productive day, we ended by networking and enjoying a cold beer (compliments of MobCraft Brewery) which sounds like a pretty successful Free Day of Code.
Shout out to our sponsors Ward 4, TSR, Startup Milwaukee, and Mob Craft Beer!
